5 fantastic free image sites for your blog

So, you’ve built your website and you’re bursting with ideas for your blog, but then you need to find just the right images to go with all that incredible content. Not only that, you want to make sure that you’re not violating anyone’s copyright.

Unfortunately, you can’t simply search Google and use the first image you come across without checking the copyright and usage permissions. There are many beautiful stock photo sites out there where you can find and buy photographs, but this can quickly become expensive so, if you’re on a budget, here are five free image resources to brighten up your posts:

1. Wikimedia Commons [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

A database of over 31 million free use media files, with really helpful categories and a search function. Celebrity images are usually very tightly protected by copyright but, here, you may just find the perfect shot you’re looking for.

2. Flickr [https://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/]

Search under Creative Commons on Flickr and a whole host of images comes up, searchable under different licences. They’ve also included a very useful description of the licences, so you know exactly what you can and can’t do. Sign up and you’ll also get 1,000 GB of photo storage. Bonus!

You can also explore the Commons [https://www.flickr.com/commons], an amazing resource from such fine institutions as the British Library and the Smithsonian. Be careful as the photographs are under a “no known copyright restrictions” statement – details here: [https://www.flickr.com/commons/usage/], so do check before you use anything from here.

3. Unsplash [https://unsplash.com/]

Browse their collections for the most stunning high-resolution photography which, in their own words, you can ‘do whatever you want’ with, including commercial use. Subscribe and they’ll send you ten new photographs every ten days.

4. Morguefile [http://morguefile.com/]

A site built ‘for creatives, by creatives’, Morguefile has an endlessly scrolling list of gorgeous images which are free use, even for commercial use, as long as you either alter the photograph in some way or credit the photographer.

5. 1 Million Free Pictures [http://www.1millionfreepictures.com/]

Does what it says on the tin! Oodles of free images to download and use.

As with any image site, whether paid or free, you will need to carefully check the rights of each photograph before you use it.

Happy blogging!
