What is alexa ranking?

Advertising companies always have many criteria when you want to be an affiliate of them by advertising some of their products and such. Many companies would put in their criteria the alexa ranking. Can anybody here please explain to me what do they mean by alexa ranking?

This is a web based company in which they rank different sites, but for some sites Alexa ranking is not that important, Alexa ranking is based on a traffic in the website wherein a certain site is rated, like 1-10 numbers 1 will be the highest score for Alexa ranking because the lower the number the higher the rating.

Andres is right with his/her explanation. I kinda think that Alexa is overrated. I think it is not that accurate in ranking websites on the internet, as it only depends on the internet users who install its toolbar on their browsers. Just my 2 cents.

Are they even allowed to do that? Won't that bring confusion to others? And isn't the traffic supposed to be responsible in ranking sites? This is gonna be like cheating.
